Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Solar Photovoltaic System?
  • Solar Photovoltaic or “PV” systems can be used on or off grid.
  • They can partially or completely reduce your dependency on fossil fuel produced electricity.
  • State tax credits up to $5000.00 per residential system, help defer costs. Credits for commercial properties are 65% of system cost with a cap of $500,000.
  • Federal tax credits are 30% of system cost (including installation labor) for home or business.
  • Credits can be taken over several years.
  • Ideal in Hawaii, where peak sun production hours are between 4 to 6 hours per day.

*What is required?

  • A south, southwest facing roof or area free of shading issues such as tall trees and buildings.
  • Enough roof space for your required sized system, or an area where a solar rack or tracking pole can be placed.
  • Engineered stamped drawings.
  • Alternative energy electrical permit submitted by a licensed electrical contractor.
  • Grid tie agreement with the HELCO.

What types of Solar PV systems are there?

You have a few choices when it comes to picking the right PV system for your home or business.

Grid tie - this system is tied to the utility grid. Once installed, permitted and inspected. You enter into a HELCO net agreement, and then receive credit at retail prices for electricity produced by your system.

Grid tie w/battery backup - same as the grid tie system but with the added bonus of a battery backup. A number of circuits are wired into your inverter and fed by a battery bank, in case of a power outage.

Off Grid or Stand Alone - This system is not tied to the utility grid and is the sole source of electricity for your house or business. This application is great for rural areas too far from the grid or if you want to be free of your electric company and their ever rising prices and fossil fueled power.
